ROSWELL, GA, September 13, 2012 (Press-News.org) Boral TruExterior Trim, a new exterior trim product from Boral USA, is making waves in the building industry by combining sustainability, durability and workability. It finds a new use for a by-product of energy production, and in doing so creates a product that outperforms traditional wood trim. The product and the contribution of its East Spencer, NC manufacturing plant to the economic development of Rowan County were highlighted during a recent visit from Congressman Mel Watt (D-NC).
Congressman Watt heard from company leaders about the innovative use of fly ash in the manufacturing of Boral TruExterior Trim. Fly ash is a by-product of the coal combustion process that is then disposed of in a landfill or recycled in a variety of products. It is most commonly used to replace cement in the production of concrete, making the end product perform better and helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
For each ton of fly ash used in place of traditional cement, a reduction of slightly less than one ton of carbon dioxide emissions is achieved. The American Coal Ash Association (ACAA) estimates that based on current fly ash reuse figures, approximately 13 million tons of carbon dioxide are prevented from entering the earth's atmosphere each year. Yet, current production of fly ash still far outpaces the recycling demand- according to the American Coal Ash Association (ACAA); 67.70 million tons of fly ash were produced in 2010, with more than 60% disposed of in landfills.
Boral TruExterior Trim provides a new and innovative use for recycling fly ash. The product is the result of nearly five years of rigorous internal and third party testing. The product is manufactured by combining proprietary polymer chemistry and coal-combustion products (ash), which add a level of inert properties with virtually no moisture cycling, making it ideal for exterior trim applications. Boral TruExterior Trim demonstrates exceptional performance, superior workability and ensures a long lasting appearance.
Products such as Boral TruExterior Trim help increase the amount of fly ash diverted from landfills. Boral TruExterior Trim is a sustainable product and has been certified Cradle-to-CradleCM by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC (MBDC). The product is manufactured in a new plant located in East Spencer, NC that is earmarked for LEED certification by the US Green Building Council.
Boral USA selected the East Spencer, N.C. location, "because of the support received from local, county and state government agencies, long standing ties to the community through the existing Boral Bricks business, the availability of a highly-skilled workforce and because it is a desirable geographic location for servicing customers," says Brian Below, General Manager of Boral Composites Inc. Boral's investment in the plant has already brought 23 new jobs to a county that is battling higher unemployment and slower job growth than the national average, and the plant is poised to grow as production increases.
Congressman Watt was impressed with the product and the manufacturing plant, and encouraged the Boral Composites team to keep in touch with him about any policy issues that impact the business. Sustainability, performance, and economic development - it's no surprise that both the Congressman and the building industry are excited about Boral TruExterior Trim.
