The intention of the hackathons is to further analyze and describe latent potential systems in the yet-uncharted Baidu algorithm. According to Baidu, Ltd., nearly 40% of all search on the system is unpredicted search. The lack of on-the-ground intelligence and solid testing has created a ranking algorithm which is non-linear and dynamic, allowing for a number of positions unintuitive to the user.
Ever Line Web Marketing, along with a score of smaller firms has been taking part in an operation funded by HSBC to "hack" Baidu by creating thousands of simulated long-tail searches and crawls in efforts to map the algorithm. The data is to be presented to Baidu and the Chinese Ministry of Information in September 2015.
