Indian Artist Krishna Hawlaji Ara Painting to Highlight Art at Clarke Auction
2012-09-21
LARCHMONT, NY, September 21, 2012 (Press-News.org) A beautiful and significant painting by renowned Indian artist Krishna Hawlaji Ara is coming to the block at Clarke Auction in Westchester, NY on Sunday Sept. 30th.

The painting, a gouache on paper of multiple figures including beggars and a dog, is to be sold in as found condition.

Ara, a founding member of the Progressive Artists Group in Bombay (now Mumbai), was the first contemporary Indian painter to meticulously use the female nude as a subject not straying from the limits of naturism unlike his colleagues such as F.N. Souza. His work was rooted in the delight of ingenuity focusing on female nudes, still lifes and human figure studies.

The painting from Clarke is an excellent representation later human figure studies and exemplifies Ara's encounters as an artist in the more poverty stricken areas of Bombay of his time. The painting comes from a Fairfield, CT home where it had been stored in a garage for over 20 years.

Other paintings and sculptures of note in this eclectic sale - which also includes antiques and furniture - include a painting by Croatian artist K. Hegedusic and 2 small sculptures by American artist G. Rickey who gave these pieces to the consignor as a gift.

A large collection of oils by local artist Alton Tobey from his estate will also be sold September 30th. Other art highlights include works by Tom Christopher, Leonard Nierman, Yolande Ardissone, Robert Zeidman, Paul Cornoyer and many others.

Clarke's catalog can be viewed at www.ClarkeNY.com. The auction is on Sunday, Sept. 30th at 2 PM. Previews are Friday and Saturday, Sept. 28th and 29th from 12 - 6 PM and Sunday, day-of-sale, from 10 AM to 2 PM sale start.
