Preventing Bicycle Accidents: Safer Roads for Seattle CyclistsBiking on the streets of Seattle is no walk in the park. Steep inclines and twisting roads present a challenging and dangerous terrain when sharing the road with automobiles. The city of Seattle; however, is hoping to recruit more cyclists, reduce bicycle accidents, and provide a higher level of safety to riders in the area.
The city's plan is to install seven miles of safe boulevards within neighborhoods throughout the city. These boulevards will be greenways where cyclists and walkers will have priority and traffic will be forced to slow down. This provides cyclists and walkers with greater access between their homes, schools, parks and even grocery stores.
Improved roads and safety precautions do significantly decrease a cyclist's chance of injury; however, accidents will always be an unfortunate reality because of human mistake and the vulnerability of bicyclists. Negligent and distracted drivers do not always see cyclists in the street and the consequence can be life threatening. When an accident does occur, making an insurance claim or taking legal action against the negligent party may be necessary to ensure that the injured cyclist is fairly compensated.
A person injured due to the negligence of a motorist may be entitled to medical expenses, lost wages and other damages. An accident victim or family of the victim may consult with an experienced personal injury attorney who can provide guidance on the road to recovery.
