Wake Education Partnership To Host 2012 Education Summit On Oct. 30

Annual Event Will Inform Local Business Professionals On Newly Adopted Common Core Standards

2012-10-03
RALEIGH, NC, October 03, 2012 (Press-News.org) Steve Parrott, president of Wake Education Partnership (http://www.wakeedpartnership.org/), has announced the 2012 Education Summit will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 30 from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Embassy Suites Raleigh-Durham/Research Triangle located at 201 Harrison Oaks Blvd. in Cary, N.C. This year's summit, moderated by WRAL reporter and anchor Gerald Owens, focuses on the new Common Core State Standards now being used in Wake County's classrooms. The goal of the summit is to inform the local business community about the new national standards, in part through a mock-classroom algebra lesson in which summit participants will become the students. The lesson will be taught by 2012 Wake County Teacher of the Year Lauren Brooks, an algebra teacher at Enloe Magnet High School. Her lesson will help demonstrate how the more rigorous Common Core standards have altered the way teachers approach new topics, and how an emphasis on using and applying new skills will better prepare students for life after graduation.

The 2012 Education Summit will include remarks by Brett Carter, president of Duke Energy North Carolina, as well as comments by top local and state education leaders.

Cost for the event is $100 per individual, $850 for a table of eight seats and $50 for WCPSS educators. Registration for the education summit closes on Tuesday, Oct. 23. QUOTES:

"By providing them with an algebra lesson similar to the instruction current students are receiving, we hope to convey to the local business community how the new national standards make common sense in preparing students for life after graduation."
