CHICAGO, IL, October 03, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Future Founders Foundation, a non-profit organization that expands entrepreneurship and career exploration programs for low income students in Chicago and Groupon Grassroots (http://grassroots.groupon.com), the philanthropic arm of Groupon, announce the launch of a local campaign to host a youth entrepreneurship experience to connect teens with new career options and adult mentors.
The campaign will be available on the Chicago Groupon Grassroots page beginning on Monday, October 1 and running through Sunday, October 7. Utilizing Groupon Grassroots' collective action model, Groupon subscribers can pledge support for the youth entrepreneurship initiative in increments of $10, with each $200 providing a career experience for 30 to 50 kids.
Through this initiative, the Future Founders Foundation and partners will provide a career exposure experience to empower low income students to consider careers they never imagined. The Foundation will introduce students to Chicago-area entrepreneurs at innovative local companies and provide the chance to observe them at work. Past trips have included a public speaking and communication skills workshop at ComedySportz, tours of Google Chicago and Microsoft, and a mobile application development bootcamp led by Motorola Mobility.
Although few schools offer entrepreneurial programs, its benefits are many, including improved academic performance, increased leadership behavior and interest in attending college, and job readiness, according to a report to the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation.
"We look forward to working with our partners and the local community to support our youth, the next generation of leaders in Chicago," said Scott Issen, CEO of Future Founders Foundation. "We are grateful to collaborate with Groupon Grassroots to expand our efforts and help more students discover what opportunities are possible and how they can achieve them."
100 percent of the Groupon Grassroots campaign proceeds will be used to provide career experiences for kids.
The Future Founders Foundation has served over 1,800 students in the Chicagoland area and operates two career exposure programs. Future Founders is an intensive entrepreneurship experience for high school students and Connect to the Future is a broad-based career exposure program to help middle and high school students learn about a variety of careers. Both programs connect students with high caliber entrepreneurs and business leaders who can mentor them through the process.
Over 90% of the student population served qualify for free or reduced lunch and approximately 80% of the students are African American, while the rest are of Hispanic origin.
