FREEHOLD, NJ, October 11, 2012 (Press-News.org) Pink has become the signature for this month, with everyone from NFL teams, politicians, and average people wearing the color in support of breast cancer awareness.
But breast cancer awareness is about much more than wearing pink or participating in local events - it is also about educating the community on the importance of early detection.
In 2011, an estimated 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer were expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 57,650 new cases of non-invasive breast cancer.
Healthy Woman OB/GYN, a local practice in the Freehold and Colts Neck areas, is using the month to educate the community on the importance of early detection through a visit to the OB/GYN.
"It is important that the community is aware that breast cancer doesn't target based on age. Starting in the teen years, women should be getting mammograms and self examining so breast cancer can be caught early, instead of too late," says Dr. Rebecca Cipriano of Healthy Woman OB/GYN.
Wendy, a breast cancer survivor and spokesperson for breast cancer awareness and Healthy Woman OB/GYN, said "I was 30 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I fought the disease for over a year after simply finding a lump one day while in the shower. Early detection saved my life."
In the United States, breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Each year, a small number of men also are diagnosed with or die from breast cancer.
"I tell everyone I know, everyone I come in contact with that it is vital to get a mammogram," says Wendy, an avid promoter of mammograms.
Even a self examination, which is how Wendy found the lump in her left breast, can serve as a great starting point for detecting breast cancer. For more information about self examination and breast cancer, please see your local Healthy Woman OB/GYN.
In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, remind those in your community the importance of yearly check-ups. It might just save a life.
