ST. LOUIS, MO, October 12, 2012 (Press-News.org) World Trade Center St. Louis hosted more than 650 business leaders, representing small- and medium-sized as well as multinational organizations, at the 2012 Growing Global Annual Luncheon on September 28, 2012, located at the Ritz Carlton. The event honored local leaders Anna Crosslin, Bob Fox and George Paz for their collective contributions to economic and international development in St. Louis. Additionally, Orion Genomics, a local small business, was recognized for its international growth.
Co-recipients Bob Fox, chairman of Casa de Salud, and Anna Crosslin, president and CEO of the International Institute of St. Louis, accepted the Global Ambassador award for their lifelong support and care for new international citizens to St. Louis and their recent leadership in advancing St. Louis' new immigration and innovation initiative. George Paz, chairman and CEO of Express Scripts was honored with the Global Business Person award for his leadership in health care and the company's commitment to international business growth. Nathan Lakey, president and CEO of Orion Genomics, accepted the Global Growth award for his company's efforts in expanding St. Louis' biotech footprint on a global scale and its scientific contributions to solving world food and medical problems.
"I am proud to receive this award as we continue to promote the region as a welcoming community for individuals around the world," said Bob Fox. "By acknowledging our region as a global community of diverse citizens, it sends a message that immigration is a positive force for economic development."
World Trade Center St. Louis has hosted the annual Growing Global event since 1998. Today, it is the St. Louis region's premier and most publicized event for the international business community. This year, Growing Global featured James Carouso, counselor for economic affairs at the United States Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia, who stepped in for Scot Marciel, U.S. Ambassador to Indonesia, as its keynote speaker. The luncheon also featured a video presentation on January's trade mission to Indonesia, led by World Trade Center St. Louis and former U.S. Senator Christopher "Kit" Bond, along with 23 participants from eight companies and four universities from the St. Louis region.
"To access top foreign talent and appropriately leverage business opportunities in some of the fastest growing international markets, we need an intentional focus on Asia," said Tim Nowak, executive director of World Trade Center St. Louis. "The recent immigration initiatives and trade missions not only enhance the competitiveness of St. Louis business in Asia markets, it promotes the region as a willing partner for shared development."
In 2012, World Trade Center St. Louis launched the Asia Trade Desk with a vision of developing deeper economic, cultural and educational connections between St. Louis and Asia. As part of its ongoing commitment to provide education and training to local businesses and individuals, World Trade Center St. Louis announced it will partner with the University of Missouri-St. Louis through its Asia Trade Desk to launch a new online Chancellor's Certificate in International Trade in January 2013. The six-month, online training program will provide participants the opportunity to learn the practical aspects of international business from experienced industry professionals.
