LUTZ, FL, October 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) A band of injured service members will gather at Grants Pass next month for an action-packed river excursion, courtesy of Freedom Alliance. The troops will arrive in Oregon on Oct. 18 for what will be the fishing trip of a lifetime on the Rogue River. The four-day adventure is facilitated by Briggs Rogue River Trips of Grants Pass, "Where the Rogue River Runs." This event is not open to the public.
The service members range from active duty to retired and all suffer service-connected injuries, varying from combat stress to amputation. The deserving heroes will travel more than 65 miles of the Rogue River, offering a chance to catch some highly sought after fish, including steelhead trout and salmon.
"Many of our service members have always enjoyed outdoor activities such as fishing. Despite their disabilities, this event allow them to take pleasure in the outdoors again in a special way," said Freedom Alliance Executive Director Calvin Coolidge. "It is one of the ways we show gratitude to the service members who have sacrificed so much for our country."
Briggs Rogue River Trips is outfitted by Bret Clark, a third-generation Rogue River guide, who has led whitewater trips for more than 35 years. The Rogue is one of eight rivers in the United States to be cited in the 1968 "Wild and Scenic Rivers Act," which allows the river to be preserved in free-flowing condition.
The fishing trip is one of several events Freedom Alliance hosts throughout the year for combat vets. Other events offered to wounded troops are family vacations, scholarship funds for their children and dinners at some of the most elegant restaurants in the country.
