NEW YORK, NY, October 21, 2012 (Press-News.org) The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from injuries allegedly caused by the use of antidepressants in the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class, is alerting the public to the results of a recent study suggesting that use of SSRIs might increase a small, but significant risk of brain hemorrhage.
Researchers at Western University in Ontario, Canada, recently "pooled the findings from 16 past studies involving more than 500,000 people who were on SSRIs or not," according to an article that appeared in the Chicago Tribune on October 17, 2012. Upon further investigation, the researchers found that "overall, antidepressant users were about 40 to 50 percent more likely to suffer bleeding in and around the brain." Based on these figures, "there would be one brain hemorrhage for every 10,000 people using an SSRI over one year," the Tribune article states.
The study's authors warned that "people who are already at an increased risk of a brain hemorrhage may need to be careful. That includes people who have had a brain bleed in the past, or are on medications that reduce blood clotting such as warfarin (Coumadin), or a combination of aspirin and clopidogrel (Plavix)." Moreover, the Web site, MedPageToday.com specified in its article on the study that "a separate analysis showed that concomitant use of an SSRI and an anticoagulant significantly increased the risk of brain hemorrhage compared with anticoagulant use alone."
The Rottenstein Law Group urges anyone who thinks they or a loved one may have suffered a stroke or some other injury from SSRIs to speak to a qualified personal injury lawyer. The firm's Zoloft Lawsuit Center, at www.zoloftlawsuitcenter.net contains social media features that allow for easy sharing on sites like Facebook and Twitter, thereby enabling visitors to spread the word about Zoloft's potential dangers.
