NEW YORK, NY, November 02, 2012 (Press-News.org) Patricia Gerbarg, MD and Richard P. Brown, MD, award-winning authors and leaders in Complementary and Alternative Medicine for psychiatry, will teach "The Language of Breath: How Respiratory Messages Improve Emotion Regulation" November 2-4, 2012 at Confer UK, an international conference which brings the world's leading researchers and healthcare practitioners together to explore how yoga can be used in a therapeutic context. The gathering will be held at The Brunei Gallery, SOAS, University of London, Thornbaugh Street, London, WC1H 0XG.

As keynote speakers, Dr. Gerbarg and Dr. Brown will introduce participants to theoretical background, research evidence, and clinical applications of powerful self-regulation strategies to improve the well-being of practitioners as well as that of their patients. They will review the use of Breath~Body~Mind techniques to relieve symptoms of stress and trauma among survivors of mass disasters such as the 2004 Southeast Asian tsunami, earthquake in Haiti, the New York World Trade Center disaster, the Horizon Gulf oil spill, victims of war and slavery in South Sudan, and genocide survivors in Rwanda.

In addition, Dr. Gerbarg will conduct a workshop on integrating mind-body practices with standard psychotherapy treatments. The workshop format will be primarily discussion with questions and answers.

Dr. Brown will lead experiential practices including gentle Qigong movements, Coherent Breathing, Resistance Breathing (Ujjayi or Ocean Breath), and Breath Moving, followed by Open Focus meditation. How to build upon this knowledge and use it in clinical practice will be discussed.

Dr. Gerbarg is an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at New York Medical College. She graduated from Harvard Medical School and the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute. In addition to her clinical practice, she provides consultation and facilitates the development of research projects on the health benefits of mind-body practices for recovery from mass disasters. She lectures on natural treatments, including herbs, nutrients, supplements, mind-body practices, and brain stimulation techniques at the American Psychiatric Association Meetings and other conferences.

Dr. Brown is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University in New York. He gives over 200 medical lectures every year, including full-day courses for the American Psychiatric Association and other professional groups, as well as workshops for non-profits such as Serving Those Who Serve in New York City. He is a certified teacher of Aikido (4th Dan), Yoga, Qi Gong, and meditation. His workshops have helped thousands of people deal with everyday stress and enabled survivors of trauma and mass disasters to recover their health and well-being.

Dr. Brown and Dr. Gerbarg are co-authors of The Rhodiola Revolution (Rodale) and three award-winning books, How To Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care (WW Norton, 2009) with Philip Muskin, MD, Non-Drug Treatments for ADHD: New Options for Kids, Adults, & Clinicians (WW Norton, 2012), and The Healing Power of the Breath, (book and CD) (Shambhala, 2012).
