CHICAGO, IL, October 14, 2010 (Press-News.org) With The Three Faces of Dissatisfaction, author M.C. Burnell makes a bold first foray into fantasy books. Released in print over Amazon, as well as for the Kindle and iPad, The Three Faces is notable for its richly detailed fantasy world as much as its colorful characters. The setting is Liath-Tamren, composed of three cities with a long history of rivalry and open dispute. Infested by witches and sorcerous cabals, with an ineffectual nobility and a large bourgeoisie, the Cities draw immigrants from around the world who come bearing dreams, foreign faiths... and all the old hatreds. Amidst the fighting and intrigue, though, are real people struggling to get by in this cramped melting pot.
It wouldn't be a fantasy book without great characters, though, and The Three Faces of Dissatisfaction has many. The boy Pinchlin, orphaned under mysterious circumstances, is quickly made to choose sides in a centuries-old feud that he can barely understand. He is rescued by the sorcerer Japhet, a powerful and morally ambivalent rogue stuck running a dubious errand in a place he hates. These and many more make The Three Faces one of the most enjoyable fantasy books from a debut author this decade.
The Three Faces of Dissatisfaction is available in a print version on Amazon.com for $11.51 plus shipping, and e-book versions are available on the Kindle and iPad stores for $7.99. Free chapters are available for view at www.mcburnell.com, along with an innovative, interactive Flash map of the Cities.
Fantasy author M.C. Burnell was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1980. She spent the next two decades roaming the nation with her family, following the romantic, itinerate lifestyle for which scientists and accountants are famed. Since then, the author has somehow acquired a number of degrees and a decent library. She currently lives with her husband in Chicago. Some of her favorite authors and inspirations include George R.R. Martin, Robert Jordan, Steven Erickson, Terry Pratchett, and Patrick Rothfuss. She also posts regularly at her fantasy blog, The Pundit's Podium, at www.blog.mcburnell.com, where she gives her thoughts on her favorite fantasy books. Over the fall of 2010, she will be posting a series on the top 20 fantasy books of all time.

Dr. Stephens, who founded pet insurance in the United States in the early 1980s, disagrees with this stance.

A study conducted by researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center shows that two new treatments may slow the progression of diabetic retinopathy, a serious eye condition in people suffering from Type 2 diabetes. Diabetic retinopathy is caused by blood vessels of the retina leaking, which causes the retina to swell. New blood vessels may also develop and cause vision loss.
The two treatments followed almost 3000 patients with diabetes. About half of them had diabetic retinopathy at the beginning of the study. Over a four year period, photos of the retina ...

New data from one federal agency reveals a growing interest in investigating all types of mortgage fraud and helping the Department of Justice pursue convictions.
The latest annual mortgage fraud report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reveals that the agency has taken a greater ...
Florida Court Requires Proof of Breath Test Accuracy in DUI Cases
2010-10-14
A September 2010 decision by a Florida Circuit Court judge has upheld a Monroe County Court ruling that limits the use of breath test results by prosecutors in drunk driving cases. The opinion, which will likely face further appeals and potentially wider application in the state, requires prosecutors to prove that the Intoxilyzer 8000 produces accurate evidence of the level of alcohol in a driver's system.
Such proof may be difficult for the state to provide in DUI cases, because the private company that makes the machine has persistently fought disclosure of the proprietary ...
Is it Time for a Change in Texas' State Jail System?
2010-10-14
In 1993, Texas made history (and drew the attention of the entire country) by establishing a state jail system designed to offer specialized treatment to certain inmates in order to lower their risk of recidivism and encourage them to become productive members of society. The program was specifically aimed at inmates convicted of a:
- Nonviolent drug-related offense
- Relatively minor theft crime
- First-offense
- Fourth-degree felony
For several years, the state jail system seemed to be working, lowering an original recidivism rate for these petty criminals from ...
