BARRIE, ON, November 29, 2012 (Press-News.org) Patrick Brown, Member of Parliament (MP) for Barrie recently toured local paper shredding company Shred North in an effort to learn more about the service and the importance of identity theft prevention.
According to a survey conducted by the Canadian Privacy Commissioner's office in 2010, 1 in 6 Canadians have already been victims of identity theft.
In addition, it is important for businesses to shred any confidential documents to help reduce liability issues when storing sensitive client information or financial records.
"Businesses are starting to see the benefits of adopting a shred-all policy", states Daryl Woytowicz, General Manager of Shred North. "In addition to reducing their liability, they reduce the ability for identity thieves to gain access to sensitive information. Also, all paper that is shredded is also recycled so there is an environmental benefit as well".
By education politicians in regard to the importance for document destruction, Shred North is hoping to see an increased push for paper shredding legislation as well.
"One of the best ways to increase awareness of identity theft prevention is through influential people like Mr. Brown", states Woytowicz. "Barrie is lucky to have a representative in Parliament who understands this very real threat".
The local paper shredding company has previously welcomed a number of prominent community leaders including MPP Rodney Jackson and Barrie Mayor Jeff Lehman. The hope is that by increasing community awareness of the issue, more preventative measures may be put into place to reduce identity theft in Ontario.
