Fine Art Photographer Steve Giovinco in Groundbreaking Museum Exhibition "the kids are alright"

Photography Exhibition with Catherine Opie, Steve Giovinco, Ryan McGinley, Examine Changing Role of Family and Contemporary Photography

2012-12-03
NEW YORK, NY, December 03, 2012 (Press-News.org) Exploring complex contemporary family life and couples through the lens of photography, fine art photographer Steve Giovinco is included in the stunning museum exhibition, "the kids are alright."

The fine art photography show is at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Sheboygan, Wisconsin and runs through January 20, 2012.

The exhibition concentrates on contemporary photography and time-based media by nearly 40 artists who bring the bedrock theme of family into the 21st Century. THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT includes award winning and widely exhibiting photographers such as Catherine Opie, Steve Giovinco, Patty Chang, David Hilliard, Ryan McGinley, Tierney Gearon, and others.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT reveals how evolving photographic technologies and social mores have influenced the manner in which families are portrayed.

According to Radio Milwaukee, "This exhibition is the first to examine the intersection of changes in the definition of family and the practice of photography."

Steve Giovinco, who exhibits his photographs in Europe and North America frequently, earned his MFA from the Yale University School of Art Photography Department.

Describing his fine art photographs, Steve Giovinco says, "The photographs are about capturing unguarded moments of couples."

Steve Giovinco's photographs explores sexual tensions and intimate relations between couples. The images are autobiographical but are about how people live as a couple today and document with unflinching clariy moments taken directly from daily life.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT includes nearly 120 works of art created by 38 established and emerging artists who reveal the current notion of family. This is the first exhibition to examine the intersection of how both family and photography have changed dramatically over the past ten years.

"The photographers and video artists featured in this fascinating and, at times, provocative exhibition demonstrate today's reality: family is a complicated entanglement of people defined by love more than tradition, convention, the law, or even blood," said Alison Ferris, John Michael Kohler Arts Center curator.

Steve Giovinco says he is honoured to be included in THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. "It's amazing to be included with such great photographers as Catherine Opie, and the other fine art photographers."

"The Kids Are All Right" will be on view at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center through Jan. 20, 2013. The exhibition then travels to the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro, N.C., June 1-August 18, 2013, and the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, Mass., September 14, 2013-January 5, 2014.
