The Miami Foundation will launch the inaugural Give Miami Day on December 12, 2012, a unique, online giving event that allows individuals in the community an opportunity to build a greater Miami through philanthropy.

2012-12-05
MIAMI, FL, December 05, 2012 (Press-News.org) Habitat for Humanity of Greater Miami, South Florida Art Center and American Red Cross of Greater Miami & The Keys, along with more than 300 other Miami-Dade County nonprofit organizations, are registered for the inaugural Give Miami Day. The Miami Foundation, with support of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, will launch the unique, online giving event that ignites individuals in the community to build a greater Miami through philanthropy. For 24 hours on December 12, 2012, the public can search profiles for nonprofits across Miami-Dade on GiveMiamiDay.org, allowing existing and potential donors to see the mission, work and impact of each organization. Every donation between $25 and $10,000 received through GiveMiamiDay.org on that day will have a percentage of it matched by The Miami Foundation. Nonprofits hope to connect with donors looking to support the important work they do in the community.

"From social networks to the media, Miami is abuzz as residents and organizations spread the word about our inaugural Give Miami Day," said Javier Alberto Soto, president and CEO of The Miami Foundation. "Our Give Miami site lets donors find and give to organizations doing the work they believe is best for Miami-Dade. It's a new and easy way to support the causes most important to them."

Donors will make charitable gifts to local nonprofits beginning at 12 midnight on December 12, 2012 and ending at 12 midnight on December 13, 2012.

The Give Miami Day website provides in-depth information about hundreds of local nonprofits. Organizations featured on the site are able to tell their story - giving people in the community a better understanding of their results and the need for their services. The website connects nonprofits with like-minded donors who share similar passions. GiveMiamiDay.org provides the transparency donors need to make the kinds of decisions that turn a simple act of giving into a wise investment.

On December 12, any individual or business may visit the website and donate to the nonprofit organization of their choice. All donations must be made with a debit or credit card at GiveMiamiDay.org, and all donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowable by law.

"We're excited by the prospect of new digital tools making it easier for residents to connect more deeply with nonprofits in the community," said Matt Haggman, program director/Miami at Knight Foundation. "By making it easier to donate online, we hope to merge people's personal passions with needs in the greater Miami area."

Interested donors may now search for registered organizations to support by visiting GiveMiamiDay.org. Beginning at midnight on December 12, the public may donate to any of the registered nonprofits on the site. For more information, please contact Marianne Maduro, senior program officer, at mmaduro@miamifoundation.org.
