Christian Weems Applauds Efforts of Rangers to Aid in Hurricane Relief

In the midst of an NHL lockout, New York Rangers players banded together to support Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts in their home city. Dedicated to volunteer service in times of calm or crisis, Christian Weems took note of their efforts.

2012-12-14
PHILADELPHIA, PA, December 14, 2012 (Press-News.org) A New York Times article detailed the volunteer efforts many members of the New York Rangers' organization have taken to lend support to their neighbors affected by the super storm Hurricane Sandy. Brad Richards, who joined the team just under a year and half ago, spearheaded many of the causes that have raised a great deal of money for relief efforts. Christian Weems who once organized a drive to make and deliver hygiene kits to Hurricane Katrina victims, commented on these wonderful acts of service.

According to the article, many players across the NHL - including Ranger Brad Richards - took part in the Operation Hat Trick charity hockey game. Former Philadelphia Flyer Todd Fedoruk organized the game held in Atlantic City.

The proceeds raised during the game were delivered to the American Red Cross, which continues to spearhead relief efforts, the article noted. Donations were also made to the Empire State Relief Fund and the New Jersey Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.

In addition to playing in the charity game, the article reported Richards also helped organize a skating clinic attended by Rangers' players. The clinic, held on Staten Island, raked in $14,000 in just about four hours. All monies raised were donated to hurricane relief efforts.

Christian Weems knows a thing or two about the importance of volunteer service after a natural disaster. In response to Hurricane Katrina, she coordinated a group of youth volunteers tasked with creating 2,500 hygiene kits for the people of New Orleans. She commented on the Rangers' efforts in a statement to the press: "When Brad Richards set out to serve others, his heart was in the right place. He was not looking for notoriety, fame, or applause; he simply set out to make a difference. That is the true meaning of service."

After the Staten Island clinic, the players bartended at a Brooklyn pub to raise an additional $15,000. Richards and Ranger teammates Steven Eminger and Marian Gaborik have also joined together with citizens to gut homes affected by the storm, the article reported.

The executive leadership team at Archer Travel is advocating for U.S. employers to extend more vacation days to their workers. With an economic recession and more jobs going overseas, many U.S. workers are unlikely to take the few vacation days that are offered them. In the United States, vacation days offered to employees in the private sector are a benefit that is not legally required. Executives ...
