Uriu Veselik: Expressive Experiments at Agora Gallery

Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature the creations of Russian artist Uriu Veselik in Sensorial Realms

NEW YORK, NY, December 14, 2012

Paint takes on a life of its own in Uriu Veselik's graphically striking images. Working in oil paint on both canvas and cardboard, the artist creates pictures that combine a rough-hewn style with an elegant sense of composition. Veselik cites such artists as Klimt and Monet as influences, and he takes the fascination with texture and color exhibited by those masters and turns it toward his own unique purposes. Whether painting landscapes or nudes, he applies thick swathes of pigment with an assured hand, giving his works a physicality that feels three-dimensional. That harnessed energy makes the surfaces of his images highly tactile and keeps the viewer's eye in constant motion.

Another strong component of Veselik's work is his color palette, which lets him put together believable scenes from unexpected combinations of shades. Yellows and reds will form an area of shadows, or multicolored blocks of blue, pink and tan will combine to form an outdoor scene. "I love experiments," the artist says, and that spirit of experimentation permeates every aspect of his work.
