NEW YORK CITY, NY, December 22, 2012 (Press-News.org) Imagine people having an active and fulfilling life at 100+ years of age! And not on some obscure Japanese island or in a remote alpine village—but right here in the USA. A new book by nutritionist and motivational speaker Gwen Weiss-Numeroff arrives just in time for holiday gift-giving as an inspirational tome for those who aspire to live well into their 100s, even if the century mark is 50 years or more away.
It was her own mother's sudden death at 70 that inspired Weiss-Numeroff to launch a two-year quest to find the secrets to vibrant longevity from those US centenarians actually living the dream. In Extraordinary Centenarians in America: Their Secrets to Living a Long Vibrant Life, Weiss-Numeroff visits 30 of the country's oldest residents—who have lived through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and incalculable cultural shifts—to learn how they not only survived living more than 100 years but how they did so with dignity and good health.
"Was it purely genetics? Did they have a good diet, exercise, smoke or drink?" wondered Weiss-Numeroff. "What did they all do in their 80s, 90s and even 100s to stay busy, healthy and happy?"
She sought out people like Besse Cooper, at 116 the world's oldest person; Dr. Leila Denmark,114, co-developer of the whooping cough vaccine and longest working pediatrician; Irving Kahn, the world's oldest active investment professional at 106; pro golfer Errie Ball, 102, sole surviving player from the first Masters Tournament; Ebby Halliday, 101, founder and chairperson of one of the largest realty companies in America; Bel Kaufman, 101, renowned novelist (Up the Down Staircase); and Benjamin Goldfaden, 99, who played in the NBA's first season. And 23 other unique individuals from across America.
Extraordinary Centenarians in America: Their Secrets to Living a Long Vibrant Life by Gwen Weiss-Numeroff, published by Agio Publishing House, Victoria (Canada), 236 pp., trade paperback edition, $24.95, ISBN 978-1-897435-86-1; hardcover edition $34.95, ISBN 978-1-897435-87-8; ebook edition, $9.99, 978-1-897435-88-5.
Extraordinary Centenarians in America is available through Amazon.com, BN.com and selected bookstores.
A portion of proceeds will go to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Gwen Weiss-Numeroff - and some of the Centenarians profiled are available for interviews.
