LANCASTER, MA, January 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) "For us as eye doctors, the first step has to be educating patients and our community about the risks of glaucoma, then making sure we encourage patients to have regular eye exams with glaucoma screenings so that we can detect and diagnose glaucoma as early as possible-and finally to advise glaucoma patients of the safest and most effective treatment options we can provide," said Dr. D'Ambrosio, Jr.
More than 2.8 million people over the age of 40 have glaucoma. Although everyone is at risk for glaucoma, there are certain predisposing glaucoma risk factors that increase the likelihood that patients will develop glaucoma There is a clear relationship between age and glaucoma risk-once you are over 40 the risk begins to increase and once you are over 60 the risk is even greater. If you have any family history of glaucoma your risk increases by 4-9 times above the average population and this is further compounded if you suffer from any other systemic or eye disease that compromises your circulation such as diabetes. Finally, race seems to play a key role in glaucoma risk. The African-American population seems to be 6-8 times at greater risk and Hispanics over 60 years of age also are more prone to developing glaucoma.
"Today, we are able to use in office advanced imaging techniques such as ocular coherence tomography (OCT) to make an early diagnosis, we have better eye drops for glaucoma, excellent laser treatments and new glaucoma surgery techniques such as the iStent , to reduce eye pressure, which is the primary cause of open-angle glaucoma. The advances in glaucoma have been terrific," summarized Dr. D'Ambrosio Jr.
