VMZINC Receives Two 2012 Building And Roofing Awards From Metal Construction News

RALEIGH, NC, January 10, 2013 (Press-News.org) VMZINC (http://www.vmzinc-us.com/), a leading specialist in innovative zinc products manufactured and sold by the Building Products Unit of Umicore, has received two 2012 Building and Roofing Awards from Metal Construction News. VMZINC was named Overall Winner for the AIA North Carolina Center for Architecture and Design in Raleigh, N.C., and earned the Best Metal Building Award for Mid-Rise for its work on the Stephen Hawking Centre at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

The AIA NC Center for Architecture and Design (http://www.cfadnc.org/), designed by Frank Harmon Architect PA of Raleigh, received this honor for its extensive use of sustainable building practices, devotion to energy efficiency and defining use of a standing seam metal roof that transitions to a wall. The 20,000-square-foot double lock standing seam roof, provided by VMZINC architectural zinc products, used a unique PIGMENTO red zinc, produced by adding mineral pigments to QUARTZ-ZINC substrate, to give the building an earthly look, while maintaining great texture and depth. With a devotion to environmentally-friendly design, zinc requires little energy to manufacture, has a long lifespan and utilizes 100 percent recyclable materials. The roof, which was installed by Baker Roofing of Raleigh, is expected to gain high points in the United States Green Building Council's (USGBC) LEED certification process.

Originally constructed in 2004, the Stephen Hawking at the Perimeter Institute Centre for Theoretical Physics (http://www.perimeterinstitute.ca/) underwent a major transformation in March 2011 with a $26.5 million, 50,000-square-foot expansion. The state-of-the-art improvement project, designed by Teeple Architects Inc., will accommodate up to 250 physicists and research trainees and will be the largest center of its kind worldwide. The project's architect, based in Toronto, was charged with the task of expanding the building aesthetically within the existing structure, while trying to avoid an additional building footprint. VMZINC supplied 23,767 square feet of 1mm zinc flat lock wall panel in QUARTZ-ZINC, ANTHRA-ZINC and natural zinc on the interior and exterior of the building, with an additional 1,693 square feet of its 1mm VMZINC standing seam wall panel in ANTHRA-ZINC on the interior.
