MISSISSAUGA, ON, January 13, 2013 (Press-News.org) With extensive experience in plastic surgery in Toronto, Dr. Michael J. Weinberg of The Mississauga Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Clinic receives a great number of questions regarding breast implants.
The fact that patients are asking is good, he says, but it underscores the number of questions that women have about breast enhancement surgery. He says it is important that women considering breast augmentation do sufficient research and gather as much information as possible about the procedure and about the available choices in breast implants.
"Initially it may appear simple," says Dr. Weinberg, who performs breast augmentation in Toronto and is certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. "There are silicone and saline implants, but within these categories there are many considerations. Women can choose from a variety of sizes, shapes, profiles and textures."
In addition to deciding which type of implant to choose, women also need to consider physical factors. These include implant placement, the type of incision to be used, the patient's overall health and whether to combine breast augmentation with other cosmetic surgery procedures. By combining a breast augmentation with procedures such as a breast lift or a tummy tuck, Toronto women can achieve more comprehensive results and minimize downtime, Dr. Weinberg says. But, a more important decision has to do with who will be placing the implants.
"The most important choice a woman will make is which surgeon will perform her procedure," Dr. Weinberg says. "In doing her research about the type of implants and the other aspects in the decision-making process, it's important that she doesn't overlook the importance of selecting a highly qualified, board-certified plastic surgeon."
Dr. Weinberg says a great deal of research regarding implants and surgeons can be done online. Many respected organizations provide valuable information about plastic surgery online, while numerous websites offer insights from the patients' perspective.
"Once women have collected as much information as they can on their own," he says, "they should formulate questions to bring with them to their consultation. And when it comes to your health, there are no right or wrong questions. Patients should always feel comfortable with and confident in the surgeon and the procedure before proceeding."
Dr. Michael J. Weinberg is a Royal College-certified plastic surgeon and an internationally known authority on cosmetic procedures. He earned a master's degree in medical biophysics and a doctorate in medicine from University of Toronto, followed by a residency in plastic surgery and a fellowship in head and neck surgery at Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Weinberg is chief of plastic surgery at Trillium Health Centre, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Ontario, where he teaches plastic surgery residents.
