Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum; this causes the supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged it creates a deeper pocket around the tooth. Once someone has periodontal disease it's not reversible, but can be controlled with proper maintenance. The American Academy of Periodontology, explains several theories that link periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when it enters the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation.
