CHERRY HILL, NJ, January 21, 2013 (Press-News.org) Outsourcing fleet logistics consulting services can help fleets of any size improve operations, save money, and respond quickly to changing market conditions, said David Beaudry, Director of Logistics Engineering and Consulting for AmeriQuest Transportation Services, in a blog posted on the AmeriQuest Website. In addition, logistics analyses should be performed continuously, not just every two to five years, he said.
"We call the process analytical outsourcing, whereby fleets can study and simulate fleet activities using sophisticated computer models that are complemented by the real world guidance of industry experts," Beaudry said. "We aggregate data on activities like routes, fleet utilization, manpower allotment, scheduling of shipping and deliveries, and usage of company facilities to recommend areas of improvement. Fleets can routinely reduce expenses by 10% to 25% during the process."
Beaudry pointed to the use of spreadsheet analyses by some fleets as missing out on the power and sophistication provided by today's robust logistics software. He also indicated several ways that the combination of logistics software and transportation professionals is a far more effective way to analyze data.
Among the many benefits of moving beyond spreadsheet analyses is the ability to look at all options for change that are available to a specific fleet, even those that were not envisioned. For example, studying data and alternate solutions for a fleet with multiple locations may become too complex and confusing using spreadsheets. It addition, busy fleet owners need data interpreted for them, which is where the advice of industry veterans come into play.

Loneliness, like chronic stress, taxes the immune system

COLUMBUS, Ohio – New research links loneliness to a number of dysfunctional immune responses, suggesting that being lonely has the potential to harm overall health.
Researchers found that people who were more lonely showed signs of elevated latent herpes virus reactivation and produced more inflammation-related proteins in response to acute stress than did people who felt more socially connected.
These proteins signal the presence of inflammation, and chronic inflammation is linked to numerous conditions, including coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, arthritis ...

2013-01-20
January 19, 2013 – New Orleans – When we typically think of kids who are the victims of school bullying, what comes to mind are isolated youth who do not fit in. The research is part of a burgeoning field of study into the effects of social media on everyday relationships and behavior. Personality and social psychologists are finding surprising ways in which people's online ...
Wind in the willows boosts biofuel production
2013-01-20
Willow trees cultivated for 'green energy' can yield up to five times more biofuel if they grow diagonally, compared with those that are allowed to grow naturally up towards the sky.
This effect had been observed in the wild and in plantations around the UK, but scientists were previously unable to explain why some willows produced more biofuel than others.
Now British researchers have identified a genetic trait that causes this effect and is activated in some trees when they sense they are at an angle, such as where they are blown sideways in windy conditions.
