KANATA, ON, February 19, 2013 (Press-News.org) Many patients report oral pain, and many more Canadians who have oral pain go untreated. Oral pain causes patients to miss school, which results in interrupted learning and lowered grades. Oral pain can also keep adults from work, which results in decreased pay. A new study by the University of Toronto and McGill University researchers examines the variables that determine oral pain among the Canadian population.
Our team that offers dentistry in Kanata at Trillium Dental, understands how oral pain affects patients and works hard to relieve oral pain and improve oral health. This study aims to locate the population with the highest levels of oral pain and also to explain the variables causing oral pain. Once oral pain among Canadians is better understood, public health policies can be shaped accordingly to reduce and prevent that pain.
Data from the Canadian Health Measures Survey for 2007 through 2009 helped researchers better understand oral pain. More than 5200 Canadians were investigated for reported oral pain and its causes. The researchers were specifically interested in oral health behaviors, social and demographic influences, use of dental services and clinical oral health.
Approximately 11 percent of Canadians reported experiencing oral pain in the past year. Researchers found adolescents had the most reported oral pain and children had the least. Canadians with lower incomes reported more oral pain that those with higher salaries. Adults reported more oral pain than elderly Canadians, most likely because elderly patients may have fewer natural teeth.
Study authors believe this research will enlighten Canadians to the problem of oral pain and encourage them to set higher oral care policy standards. Since oral health is so closely associated with total body health, cosmetic dentist Dr. David Bartos and his team want Canadians to enjoy the best oral health possible. Lessening patients' oral pain and improving their at-home care should be a dentist's top priority.
At Trillium Dental, dentists practice Stittsville IV sedation to lessen pain during specific procedures. The team also improves oral health with routine cleanings and alignment procedures such as Invisalign and Invisalign Teen.
