NEW HAVEN, CT, February 22, 2013 (Press-News.org) Vinay Nayak, age 19, is proud to announce his candidacy as Ward 1 Alderman of New Haven, CT. If elected, Vinay Nayak hopes to help engage both social and economic issues to improve life in New Haven. Though currently a student at Yale University, Vinay Nayak assures voters that the fundamental interests of Yale and New Haven are inseparable. "As a Ward 1 Alderman, I would be in a unique position to represent the interests of the Yale community as well as be a champion for New Haven families," says Vinay Nayak.
Despite his age, support for Vinay Nayak has surged - and it shows as the fundraising totals come in. To date, Vinay Nayak has raised $6,596 compared to $2,851 for his closest competitor. Voters are enthused about Vinay Nayak's commitment to "keep us safe, make government more transparent and accountable, and finally revitalize our economy." Indeed, Vinay Nayak is pleased that his message is resonating with supporters. Improved fundraising totals means that Vinay Nayak can spend less time raising funds and more time focusing on the issues and engaging with the voters on a personal basis.
This isn't Vinay Nayak's first venture into politics. While he lived in Oakbrook, IL, a suburb of Chicago, Vinay Nayak volunteered for Barack Obama's presidential campaign. Obama's message of hope and change excited Vinay Nayak and motivated him to volunteer throughout the duration of the election. At school, Vinay Nayak founded "Students for Barack Obama," which encouraged his peers to become politically informed and engaged.
Now, Vinay Nayak is in charge of his own campaign, focusing on the issues that are important to him. One issue includes the ever-increasing homeless population. Vinay Nayak believes that there is more the local government can and should do to prevent homelessness. Aside from increasing funding for housing programs, Vinay Nayak urges the need to support homelessness prevention efforts to avert future cases.
Though he is still a student at Yale, Vinay Nayak argues that the student population of Yale represents approximately 95-97 percent of the population of Ward 1. "I can definitely balance the needs of the Yale community with those of the families living in the surrounding area," says Vinay Nayak. Aside from representing and engaging Yale families, Vinay Nayak has worked alongside the Board of Alderman since his freshman year. This allowed him the opportunity to witness the inner workings of the board as well as meet people who share the same passion of bettering the community.
Just as Vinay Nayak volunteered for Barack Obama's campaign through the grassroots, he hopes his own candidacy will be buoyed by the needs and wants of the people. On Yale's campus, Vinay Nayak has single-handedly registered 600 new voters, which is impressive considering that Yale College Democrats only registered 200. Aside from being beneficial for his campaign, Vinay Nayak hopes this influx of new voters is indicative of a new level of engagement and interest in politics. "More youth need to get involved and informed on the issues that effect us day to day," says Vinay Nayak.
