CHARLESTON, SC, March 13, 2013 (Press-News.org) Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina organized an estate planning clinic for the homeowners at the Horry Habitat For Humanity in Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday January 26th 2013. The clinic provided free wills and healthcare power of attorney and living wills for those that participate in the Habitat program. The Habitat for Humanity Wills Clinic program is sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the South Carolina bar and holds several clinics a year at local Habitat offices throughout the state. Once homeowners in the program die there is a potential that the home might be lost if there is no clear succession in ownership.
The probate process can become much more difficult without a will for a habitat homeowner as many family members could hold an interest in the property and the ownership of the house may have a greater chance of being lost. The wills clinic was also held in conjunction with the 2013 South Carolina Bar Convention that was being held in Myrtle Beach the same weekend as the clinic. The SC Bar Conventions is the annual meeting that has lawyers throughout the state attend meetings and classes. Attorney Evan Guthrie scheduled the wills clinic to coincide with the convention to give young lawyers attending the convention a chance to participate in a service project that would benefit the local community. Lawyers from throughout the state volunteered for the clinic including Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville. The clinic was held in the upstairs office of the Horry Habitat and Restore. Homeowners were prescheduled to come in and were able to get their documents prepared and executed in the same day. Attorney Guthrie looks forward to organizing and participating in future Habitat wills clinics in different locations in South Carolina.
