4 Year Old Dies Because of Hospital Mistake

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center overprescribes heavy pain killer to 4 year old

ROCKFORD, IL, March 28, 2013

A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of an Illinois family following their 4-year-old son's death from an overdose of hydrocodone. The boy was brought to CSF Saint Anthony's Medical Center for a standard tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. While in the hospital, the child was administered heavy narcotic medication including morphine and Vicodin.

Upon discharge the mother was given a prescription for more Vicodin and instructions to give it to her son once every 4 hours. Several hours later that night, the mother awoke to the sound of gasping for air from her son and called 911. The child was taken to Rockford Memorial where he died from an overdose of Hydrocodone.

After the child's death, a coroner's inquest was convened to investigate whether the mother had properly acted in administering the medication; however the inquest found that the mother did everything exactly as instructed by the hospital.

Thereafter, an investigation by the family's attorney determined that the hospital had in fact overprescribed pain medication to the child and failed to properly instruct the mother in its use. The hospital was also responsible for discharging the child out of its care before the child was ready to leave safely. Both failures directly led to the child's asphyxiation and caused his death.

Sean Murray, a partner at the Chicago law firm of Anesi Ozmon Rodin Novak and Kohen on behalf of the family, has filed a wrongful death case in Winnebago country seeking compensation for their son's death.
