LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND, March 29, 2013 (Press-News.org) Surface engineering and heat treatment specialist, Wallwork Heat Treatment, has extended their capability with the installation of a new high capacity furnace for the processing of aluminium and magnesium components. The highly adaptable 800 Kilo furnace provides customised heat treatment processing for engineering components ranging from items as small as 0.5mm to single items of up two cubic metres.
Wallwork's core business is the metallurgical improvement of critical components for advanced industries such as aerospace, motorsport and medical device manufacturers. The new non-ferrous furnace adds to their commercial heat treatment capability and is part of a three year development programme that will significantly increase this capacity to win market share for the processing of high value components.
Variable quench times are achieved by the new furnace by the application of different quench methods, achieving quench times of less than 10 seconds. This is a particular advantage when processing very small pressed or cast precision components that may be adversely affected by extended heating.
Ian Lacey, the business development manager for the project, noted, "All processes are fully documented for quality assurance purposes, currently to AS9100 standard and we have on-site laboratory back-up for testing and validation. We are happy to test-process items for new customers to optimise the treatment before scaling up to commercial volumes."
To ensure a truly national service, with rapid turnaround of products for customers, Wallwork run three UK sites at Manchester, Birmingham and Cambridge operating 24/7. A fleet of over 40 vehicles provide collection and delivery. Plans are in hand to increase thermal processing capacity in the company with further investment in equipment later in the year. In addition to non-ferrous heat treatment, the company offer thermal processing using vacuum, sealed quench and thermochemical processes as well as the application of advanced coatings by physical vapour deposition.
