ROANOKE, VA, April 03, 2013 (Press-News.org) The Virginia Veterinary Medical Association (http://www.vvma.org/) has announced that Norbo von der wilden Nachbarschaft, a disaster search canine more commonly referred to as "Racker," received the 2013 Animal Hero award at the 2013 Virginia Veterinary Conference on Friday, March 1 at The Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, located at 110 Shenandoah Ave in Roanoke, Va. This award is presented to an animal that has performed an individual act of service or heroism, or that has, in performing his or her daily duties, provided an outstanding service to humans.
Racker, a German native canine, was deployed to Haiti in 2010 to assist in the earthquake disaster search. He handled the stress of travel, heat and a complete change in environment, searching both day and night for disaster victims. Racker also helped with disaster relief efforts in Japan after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. Frigid temperatures, snow storms and horrific conditions added to the difficulty of searching within the devastation. Racker continues to keep his search skills sharp with local training as well as special trips to work with other task forces.
QUOTES:
"Racker is a truly amazing canine with great energy and determination and we are happy to announce that he is the 2013 Animal Hero," said Robin R. Schmitz, executive director of the VVMA. "After his time in Haiti and Japan, Racker is very deserving of this award and we are extremely proud of his inspiring disaster relief efforts."
