CHARLESTON, SC, April 03, 2013 (Press-News.org) Evan Guthrie of the Evan Guthrie Law Firm in Charleston, South Carolina taught an estate planning and probate class at John's Island Regional Library on Wednesday February 13th 2013. This class covered the basics of planning an estate and the ins and outs of probate court in South Carolina. This was the second presentation that attorney Evan Guthrie has made at the library on Johns Island with the first one taking place the previous summer. John's Island Regional Library is part of the Charleston County Library system and is the newest of the regional libraries in the area. Mr. Guthrie's presentation was open to the general public and was free of charge. In the class attorney Guthrie covered fundamentals including what encompasses an estate, the different kinds of estates there are, what assets are, the most beneficial types of assets to own, what categories different types of assets fall into, how probate court operates, the major steps in the probate process, how long a typical probate lasts, the costs of probating an estate, what a personal representative is and typical duties, the most common types of estate plans, what happens without an estate plan, the main functions of a will, what a living trust is, the advantages and disadvantages of a trust, what a durable power of attorney is, how the probate court can intervene without a durable power of attorney, how health care documents and decisions can impact end of life and incapacity, the most common types of mistakes people make when they go about making a plan, and all the items and documents that people should have together as part of comprehensive plan. Mr. Guthrie enjoyed being able to use his legal talents to give back to the community and spread awareness on such a crucial topic. Attorney Guthrie looks forward to being able to return to Johns Island Library again in the future to teach another class. Mr. Guthrie leads several legal education classes a year.
