When patients think of periodontal disease, they tend to focus on the immediate effects, such as red and swollen gums and possible tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a serious condition that affects millions of Americans and causes tooth loss, bone and gum tissue deterioration. This condition develops when the harmful bacteria in the mouth combine with food particles and white blood cells to form a sticky film called plaque. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, patients with gum disease are 49 percent more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54 percent more likely to develop pancreatic cancer, and 30 percent more likely to develop blood cancers. In addition to cancer, periodontal disease has been linked to respiratory disease and other serious health conditions.
