Atlanta painters at The Painting Company explained that higher cost options, such as Benjamin Moore, available for as much as $68 a gallon, did well in the Consumer Reports test, but were not top-rated.

"Middle-of-the-road paints are a wise choice because after a certain price level, additional benefits are limited," says Chris Camp, Owner of The Painting Company. "The cheapest options tend to be less durable and perform inconsistently. Mid-level brands offer more cost-effective options, such as self-priming paints. These eliminate the need for a primer coat, saving you time and money."
