A comprehensive periodontal examination, or CPE, can help to identify periodontal disease and other conditions affecting the gums before they wreak havoc on the patient's oral health.
The comprehensive periodontal examination is similar to a routine annual dental examination. The condition of your teeth and gums will be evaluated and the dentist will carefully check for any oral health issues related to the teeth or soft tissues. However, comprehensive periodontal examination is much more thorough in that additional aspects of the teeth and gums are evaluated, such as the depth of the pockets under the teeth, levels of gum line recession, gum line inflammation and the condition and density of jaw bone. The periodontist conducts this assessment with a combination of visual examinations and imaging technologies.
If signs of periodontal disease are present, Dr. Markzar, Beverly Hills dental implants dentist, will take steps to treat the condition before it becomes progressively worse. If the condition is in its earliest stages, he will work with the patient to improve their oral hygiene. However, if the condition is more advanced, non-surgical techniques such as scaling and root planing must be performed to eliminate the bacteria. Finally, if the condition has caused the gums to recede, pocket reduction surgery or bone or gum grafts may be necessary. Teeth that are lost due to periodontal disease can be replaced with dental implants or bridges.
