Local Maryland Sustainability Company, greeNEWit, Wins Social Entrepreneurship Award from the Horizon Foundation

greeNEWit will be recognized tomorrow at the Horizon Foundation Annual Meeting as recipients of the Shirley Collier Giraffe Award. The sustainability company was chosen for the award for their service to their community as social entrepreneurs.

2013-06-05
COLUMBIA, MD, June 05, 2013 (Press-News.org) greeNEWit, an energy efficiency company that provides energy and water saving upgrades that helps homeowners and renters reduce energy consumption and save money on utility bills, is being recognized by the local community in Howard County. The company is receiving the Horizon Foundation's Shirley Collier Giraffe Award that was created to honor the Foundation's immediate past board chair and as a way to recognize local organizations that 'stick their neck out' as social entrepreneurs.

The Horizon Foundation considered numerous local organizations and businesses for the $2,000 prize, but ultimately selected greeNEWit for their contributions to the regional economy and their commitment to giving back to the community. In particular, greeNEWit's "local to global" campaign and the OUR Schools Program made them worth recipients of this award.

"We're determined to reinvest the prize money into an initiative that will truly make an impact," greeNEWit Co-Founder Josh Notes said. "Our intent is to tie this directly into the Agents of Change Program at greeNEWit that will provide four students with 10 weeks of social entrepreneurship training. This program will provide these students with important career skills and instill a passion in them for entrepreneurship and sustainable living while they get hands on experience as social entrepreneurs."

greeNEWit will be recognized at the Horizon Foundation Annual Meeting from 9:00 a.m. to noon on June 4, 2013, taking place at Howard Community College, 10901 Little Patuxent Pkwy, Columbia, Maryland.
