BRONX, NY, June 09, 2013 (Press-News.org) HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS AND STUDENTS DINE TOGETHER FOR A CAUSE AT THE STUDENT CENTER OF WAYNE STATE UNIVERSITY IN MICHIGAN

WHAT: Mentoring in Medicine and the College of Nursing at Wayne State University through its C2 Pipeline Program are hosting on June 13th the "Dinner with Healthcare Professionals" at the Student Center of Wayne University in Detroit, Michigan. This event seeks the support of healthcare professionals in order to help ignite, cultivate, and prepare students to pursue a health science career.

Wayne State University with funding from the Michigan Department of Education, will be offering through their C2 (College and Career-Ready) Pipeline program 50 students each from 5 public high schools in Michigan, a 38-week program to improve academic achievement, enhance preparation for college and encourage interest in health careers.

WHY: The mission of Mentoring in Medicine is to diversify the workforce by exposing underrepresented students to careers in health care. There is a critical shortage of minority physicians and other healthcare professionals. According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, while racial and ethnic minorities make up approximately 25 percent of the U.S. population, they make up only six percent of practicing physicians and only 12 percent of U.S. medical school graduates.

WHO: The Dinner with Healthcare Professionals event is presented in partnership with The School of Nursing at Wayne State University and Mentoring in Medicine.
