Inaugural Jook Fest Going Down To Crown King Of Jook

Hot steppers from all across the Sunshine State will get a chance to shake what their momma gave 'em during the King of Jook Battle between Tampa and Miami artists at the First Annual Jook Fest Saturday, November 20 in St. Petersburg, Fla.

2010-11-03
TAMPA, FL, November 03, 2010 (Press-News.org) Festivities are scheduled to include a glow-in-the-dark dance party, Conde' Couture fashion show, bikini contest, clap dem thighs contest and more than four hours of live performances, 20 artists, 10 dance groups and four DJs as well as all-day giveaways. The highlight of the celebration will be the coveted Keep Jookn Contest, a judged dance competition between the state's hottest acts. The winners will receive cash, gift cards, a shopping spree at Best Buy and the opportunity to spend the day with one of the celebrity guest artists.

In attendance will be popular Miami artists Bizzle, NMB Stunnaz, Grindmode, and Reggie Cash Flow, who will show Tampa just what jook is all about Miami style. Other celebrity attendees will be regional jook artists Strizzo, Shawty, The Heavy Grindaz, Cristol, Ryan Kendrick, Famous Kid Brick and Lady Duet just to name a few. Wrapping up the night will be a special tribute to Tampa Tony featuring the Splitta Squad and legendary Tampa artists Krazy, Rated R, and Tata.

"Jook Fest is the first of its type to really hit the Florida market," said Amber Craft, Marketing Director for Jook Fest. "For years, Miami and Tampa have been battling it out but they have never hit the same stage to compete for the crown."

Described by the Urban Dictionary as a "style of hip hop music created in the Tampa Bay area based off of bounce, booty/ bass music and some elements of dancehall reggae," jook began more than 100 years ago in central and south Florida. For several years, the two cities have been battling back and forth for to be crowned the king of jook.

Popular Jook music artists over the years include DJ Trans, Strizzo, Tom G, Young Fella, Rated R, Tampa Tony, Cristol, Krazy and Khia, Bizzle, just to name a few. The style gained popularity after Tampa (nicknamed the City of Jook) took it to another level by incorporating hip hop/ booty bass flavor and giving the genre an official name. Miami (nicknamed the City of Jookin') took that flavor, and tweeked it a little more and made a dance out of it.

"Florida is a state of music, dancing, fashion, and partying," said Craft. "These artists have had a hard time breaking through in the music business because Florida's style is so different than any other. These artists deserve some recognition for creating a style of music that the south loves and supports."

Now on November 20th at Fergs Courtyard, attendees will witness the biggest jook concert, dance competition, and fashion show ever performed on one stage. And in the end, the crowd will decide who is "King of Jook!"

Where: Fergs Courtyard (Behind Fergs Sportsbar) 1320 Central Ave St Petersburg, FL 33705
