HUDSON, OH, June 22, 2013 (Press-News.org) Richard Grell, master Windsor chairmaker, announced the addition of three classes to his fine woodworking instruction at his Woodworking Workshop. The classes provide expert instruction on the authentic crafting of an adult or child-sized Hoop-back Windsor Armchair and his unique techniques for applying aged-paint finishes on a Windsor footstool.
"I've been building Windsor chairs for over 40 years and as a master craftsman, I'm eager to pass on the techniques I've developed," said Richard Grell, instructor of the R. Grell Woodworking Workshop. "It's a one-of-a-kind experience for hobbyists as well as skilled woodworkers and I'm very excited to share it."
In the Hoop-back Windsor Armchair class students will learn how to build a Hoop-back Windsor chair. Participants apply century-old techniques with traditional tools and methods. The Aged-Paint Finishing concentrates on skills for applying an antique paint finish on a Windsor footstool crafted by Grell. In the Child's Hoop-back Windsor Armchair class, instruction will guide participants in crafting a child-size Windsor chair. Students will carve, whittle spindles, steam bend an oak bow, wedge joints, and turn on a 200-year-old foot treadle lathe.
"It's more than the product, but also the process," said Grell. "Like smelling the wood chips as you carve, the grip of the wood in your hands while bending a steamed piece of oak, and the sound a sharp hand tool gliding over the wood."
Prior woodworking experience is not necessary. All materials and tools are provided in each workshop. Classes take place in a converted barn that offers a unique woodworking experience with a limited amount of students to ensure one-on-one instruction.
The R.Grell workshop opens at 8:30 a.m. with classes starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending at 5:00 p.m. Lunch is provided for optimum class time. Classes begin on July 8 at the workshop in Hudson, Ohio. For a full class schedule, price list and registration form go to http://richardgrell.com/woodworking-workshop/class-schedule. For more information, contact Richard Grell at 330-650-0586.
