PHOENIX, AZ, June 27, 2013 (Press-News.org) With daily temperatures now in the triple digits, many homeowners are burdened with accelerating energy bills. Because most homes in the Valley have attached garages, the more heat in the garage, the more heat that can escape into the home. Insulated garage doors and tinting garage door windows, are cost efficient ways to reduce the temperature in your garage and make it more energy efficient. A1 Garage Door Services offers a number of maintenance services and can provide ideas on how to keep the hot air out this summer.
Many homeowners rarely even think about their garage doors, unless it needs to be repaired or replaced. Not many consider it an important conduit to reduce the inflow of cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer but remember, a garage door is approximately 20-40% of one side of a home. And garage door windows can also act as a source of added heat unless they have been tinted to reflect the suns rays.
A-1 Garage Door Services offers insulated, energy-efficient garage doors staring at around $600 for a two-car garage. While the cost savings will vary according to the size of the garage, garage wall and attic insulation as well as personal habits, most insulated garage doors will pay for themselves in two-to-three years. Tinted windows will also help reduce heat in a garage, the tinting costs vary according to the size of the window, but again, the savings in energy will off-set the cost of the tint.
If garage walls and attics are well insulated, having an insulated garage door and tinted windows, just seems to make sense.
"Many homeowners don't recognize the importance of a yearly maintenance check-up for their garage doors. While the doors themselves may be functioning properly, there may be an opportunity to provide long-term savings by replacing a seal or spring to make sure that the door is operating at maximum efficiency," said Thomas Mello of A1 Garage Door Services. "Several years ago, the government was offering a 30% Energy Tax Credit on energy efficient garage doors, which supports their effectiveness in saving energy."
Here are a few tips when looking for a new insulated garage door:
• Different construction materials have varying energy efficiency properties. Polyurethane has higher insulating properties than polystyrene, making it a more energy-efficient choice.
• Doors that have seals between sections help in protecting against wind and moisture.
• The new insulated doors currently on the market are typically quieter than their predecessors.
• Because of the insulation, they have a more attractive "finished" look on the interior.
• Ensure that your garage door bottom seal isn't work causing outside air to seep in underneath.
• Make sure that the inside door leading from the home to the garage is properly sealed for additional heating/cooling savings.
"With many garage's doing double-duty as playrooms, workshops or 'man caves,' there's even more reason to maintain more consistent temperatures in order to utilize the space as an added living area," said Mello.

Anyone looking to save on their summer cooling bills should think about having a garage door maintenance check and installing energy-efficient, garage doors.
