RICHMOND, VA, November 11, 2010 (Press-News.org) Statistics indicate that about one in 15 American is diagnosed with sleep apnea and about one in 50 Americans are undiagnosed sufferers of the disorder. The US Department of Health and Human Services has noted that an estimated $ 16 billion is lost annually in medical costs associated with lost work time.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has identified a total of 86 sleep disorders, with sleep apnea being the most common disorder. Sleep Apnea is a disorder that's caused by the blockage of the air way, when the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses and closes during sleep. A research conducted by the Harvard Medical School suggests that a lack of sleep negatively impacts perception and judgment and also results in reduced efficiency at work place.
A CPAP machine works more like a vacuum cleaner, where the air is blown rather than sucked. The machine is connected to a CPAP mask ( http://www.yourcpapmask.com ) through a bendable hose, and helps the patient get sound sleep at night.
"There are several types of CPAP masks in the market. A patient could either choose from a Respironics ( http://www.yourcpapmask.com ) mask, Mirage mask or a ResMed CPAP mask. However there isn't a one size fits all CPAP mask available. Before you decide to buy a CPAP mask, ensure that it is comfortable and provides a proper seal for the airflow," says, Mr. Vincent, of yourcpapmask.com, an online retail shop that sells , full face CPAP masks, CPAP nasal pillows and CPAP masks.
"There are masks that cover the nose and mouth with straps that stretch across the forehead and cheeks. These full face masks are best for those who tend to move around a lot when they sleep. However they tend to make the wearer feel claustrophobic and might need a little getting used to. There are other types of nasal masks that fit under the nose with straps that cover less of your face. These however aren't recommended for those who tend to move around a lot when sleeping, but are ideal for bedtime activities like reading. CPAP nasal pillows are ideal for patients who don't breathe through their mouth and don't have problems with nasal blocks," he adds.
It's important to work closely with your doctor and the CPAP supplier as it's very important that you purchase the right CPAP mask. To know more, visit, http://www.yourcpapmask.com
