Worldwide Who's Who Names Michele O. Newman, Ph.D. Professional of the Year in Higher Education

Dr. Newman has devoted her post-retirement career to celebrating her late husband's artwork

2014-02-28
AUSTIN, TEXAS, February 28, 2014 (Press-News.org) Michele Newman, Retired Chairwoman of the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at Pace University, has been named a Worldwide Who's Who Professional of the Year in Higher Education. While inclusion in Worldwide Who's Who is an honor, only a small selection of members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Who's Who membership.

Dr. Newman has 31 years of professional experience, and is currently retired from her position as the chairwoman of the Department of Languages and Cultures at Pace University. Prior to her retirement, she was responsible for teaching language arts and writing, as well as creating poetry. Before she joined Pace University, Dr. Newman worked as a teacher at Lycee de Saint Germain-en-Laye, and she also served as an English and Latin teacher at Lycee de Sceaux. Dr. Newman's proudest moment was receiving a Best Teacher Award from Pace University's Pleasantville campus in 1987.

Meeting David Newman, a young American sculptor, was certainly a life-changing event that expanded Dr. Newman's horizons: it changed her path from teaching English in France to discovering Italy, the world of art, and later on the opportunity to join the ranks of American Academe. Dr. Newman would go on to marry David, and his artwork would continue to have a profound effect on her life for years to come. Now, years after his passing, Dr. Newman is engaged in expanding "An Art Journey," describing her husband's production in sculpting, painting and writing, as well as organizing her memoirs, a multifaceted document which will reveal the complexity of their lives. Dr. Newman is committed to the environment, wildlife, medical research and helping wounded war veterans. In 2010, Finishing Line Press published her poetry collection entitled "Soulscapes." It is Dr. Newman's hope that she can share David's artwork with others so that he can be given his rightful distinction as a talented and dedicated artist.

Looking back, Dr. Newman attributes her success to her positive attitude, love of the discipline and interest in her studies. She became involved in her profession because she was the daughter of village school teachers in France and loved languages. The desire to expand her awareness was also a driving force. The highlights of her career were being elected as chairperson by her colleagues and having changed the offerings of the department toward cooperation between language and business programs.

Dr. Newman received a Ph.D., Fordham University, as well as a master's degree from La Sorbonne. She is a member of the Modern Language Association of America and the American Association of University Women. In recognition of her talent and dedication, she was presented with a Professor of the Year Award from Pace University. In years to come, Dr. Newman hopes to publish the book she has created about her late husband, as well as another book of poetry, entitled "The Tormented Trees of Texas."
