Elgin, IL Podiatrist Talks About The Risks Of Diabetes-Related Foot Problems

Are you at risk for diabetic foot problems? Read the full story below.

2014-04-10
ELGIN, IL, April 10, 2014 (Press-News.org) Approximately 25.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. That means 25.8 million people have an increased risk of foot problems. If you have diabetes, you are at risk for diabetic foot problems. What does it mean to have diabetes, and why is it an issue for people's feet?

If a person has diabetes, it means he/she has too much glucose in the blood. And too much glucose can disturb normal blood flow and cause nerve damage.

"Diabetes can onset many foot problems, including foot ulcers, skin changes, neuropathy and poor circulation. Foot care is important for patients of all ages, but patients with diabetes need to be more strict and alert when caring for their feet. Nerve damage is one of the more serious problems to be aware of," explains Dr. Lyon, Elgin, IL podiatrist at Lyon Foot and Ankle Clinic.

For any person with diabetes, neuropathy is always a possibility, which means other foot problems can follow suit. What is neuropathy? It's diabetic nerve damage of the foot. When a nerve is damaged, it's difficult to feel temperature changes and pain. When a patient doesn't have sensation in the foot, he/she might not notice blisters or foot injuries. Open wounds can become infected, causing other serious health issues.

Do you have diabetes? Are your feet concerning you? Write down the symptoms and call Dr. Lyon's Elgin, IL podiatry office, Lyon Foot and Ankle Clinic. The main number is (630) 495-1240, so patients can feel free to call and schedule an appointment. Restorative Dental Treatment Helps Patients Achieve Long-Lasting Smiles

2014-04-10
When people think of health, they typically just think of general health, not the condition of the teeth and gums. Oral health is just as important as overall health because dental problems can negatively affect a patient's overall health. Patients are instructed to brush and floss their teeth on a daily basis, and this is to keep plaque bacteria at bay. However, bad oral hygiene only spurs further bacteria growth and the development of acid, which eats away at tooth enamel. Once tooth decay develops, a patient has already made a dent in his/her oral health. If a ...
