Seattle Maritime 101 Celebrates Seattle's Five Star Working Waterfront; More than 30 Events Planned including Expanded Vigor Seattle Maritime Festival

SEATTLE, WA, April 28, 2014 (Press-News.org) It's all about showcasing Seattle's maritime industry and celebrating its important role in the community and the Puget Sound economy. Seattle Maritime 101 celebrates Seattle's Five Star Working Waterfront and is produced by a unique partnership between government, businesses, labor and maritime organizations.

"The vision for Seattle Maritime 101 is to create an exciting series of activities to showcase the value of Seattle's maritime industry," said Rachel Shrewsbury, President of the Propeller Club, which is coordinating Seattle Maritime 101. Presenting sponsors also include the Port of Seattle, Vigor Industrial and The Seattle Times' Newspapers in Education (NIE) program.

Overall, more than 30 special events, including the Vigor Seattle Maritime Festival, tours, Career Day, family activities and lots of other family fun, are set through the end of May. This year, Seattle Maritime 101 also celebrates the Centennial of the Port of Seattle's Fishermen's Terminal and the 50th Anniversary of Containerization.

Key Seattle Maritime 101 Programs
- A special 12-page Seattle Maritime 101 supplement was published in the Seattle Times on April 6. The supplement features a cargo hold full of stories about the maritime industry. The supplement was also distributed to classrooms throughout the Puget Sound region as a part of NIE program, which currently serves over 44,000 students and nearly 1,000 educators in Washington state. - The Vigor Seattle Maritime Festival, Seattle's largest maritime industry celebration, will expand to two days in 2014, with a Harbor Open House on the downtown waterfront on Saturday, May 10, and Family Fun Day at South Lake Union on Sunday, May 11.

The world's largest tugboat races, workboat parade, three free harbor tours, Seattle Waterfront Chowder Cook-Off, vessel tours, kids' activities, displays and demonstrations.

Sunday, May 11, 11a.m. - 5p.m.
World Invitational Boat Building Championships, Survival Suit Races, two free ship canal boat tours, vessel tours, kids' boat building, music, and displays.

"By expanding the Festival, we can showcase the working waterfront in Lake Union, the Ship Canal and Fishermen's Terminal," Shrewsbury said. "This is a great year to expand the Festival, as the Port of Seattle celebrates the Centennial of Fishermen's Terminal." Activities at Lake Union Park are produced by Northwest Seaport.
