LOUISVILLE, KY, November 23, 2010 (Press-News.org) Louisville, Kentucky cosmetic dentist and AACD member, Christian Hahn, DDS, volunteers for the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation's Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program. This program is dedicated to healing the effects of domestic violence by providing free consultation and dental treatment to restore the smiles of survivors of domestic violence.
"Through the Give Back a Smile program, AACD member dentists assist survivors by treating the dental injuries that were sustained from domestic violence, so that survivors may reclaim their smiles, their self-esteem and, ultimately, their lives," said Dr. Hahn of Ideal Dentistry.
How Give Back a Smile Works
- Domestic violence survivors who have suffered dental injuries in the smile zone from abuse from a former intimate partner or spouse can contact GBAS toll-free at 800 773 GBAS (4227).
- Survivors must make an appointment with a counselor, domestic violence advocate, social worker, or therapist to complete the advocate section of the GBAS application.
- GBAS conducts the initial review of the application; however, the dentist has the final say as to the eligibility of the applicant.
- If eligible, the AACD connects the survivor with a local GBAS volunteer who provides treatment at no charge to the recipient.
Helping the Community by Helping Individuals
"Because more than 5 million people are affected by domestic violence every year in the United States and Canada, there is clearly a need for the program like GBAS to help survivors rejuvenate their lives to the caring hands of a local dentist," Dr. Hahn said.
For complete details about the GBAS program, visit www.givebackasmile.com or call toll-free 800.543.9220. Those interested in finding help with the GBAS program can also visit the website www.givebackasmile.com, call the national hotline at 800.773.GBAS (4227), or e-mail givebackasmile@aacd.com.

Rare disease reveals new path for creating stem cells
2010-11-22
BOSTON, Mass. (November 21, 2010)—As debilitating as disease can be, sometimes it acts as a teacher.
Researchers at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine have found that by mimicking a rare genetic disorder in a dish, they can rewind the internal clock of a mature cell and drive it back into an adult stem-cell stage. This new "stem cell" can then branch out into a variety of differentiated cell types, both in culture and in animal models.
"This certainly has implications for personalized medicine, especially in the area of tissue engineering," ...

"Studies of this type, which used to take months in animal models, can now occur on a time scale of ...
