CORNWALL, ENGLAND, November 30, 2010 (Press-News.org) Cornwall holidaymakers will have a chance to experience some of the region's traditional midwinter celebrations at the Montol Festival next month.
Based in Penzance, the festivities are set to begin on Wednesday December 8th and will culminate on Tuesday December 21st, which is also known as Montol Eve.
On this day, the people of Penzance engage in the west Cornish custom of guise dancing, which involves wearing masks and acting out traditional plays such as St George and the Turkish Knight.
Montol Eve, which is the main event of the festival, also features the lighting of fire beacons and a spectacular torch-lit procession from St Johns Hall through the streets of the town.
From 20:00 GMT on December 21st, Penzance's Chapel Street will be closed to traffic for a special street party.
People staying in one of the luxury hotels Cornwall has to offer will be able to see a performance from Cornish dance troupe Kemsyk as part of the proceedings.
Other performers lined up for the Montol Eve celebrations include Death by Skiffle, Dalla and The Hornets.
The festivities will also include film screenings, live music, carol singing and fire throwing.
For more information on this event, visit the Montol Festival website.
