CHICAGO, IL, December 07, 2010 (Press-News.org) Inner-city Students from Turn-Around School Celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week with the Little Green Money Machine!
Over 20 students from Chicago's West Side John Marshall High School showcase their business savvy with the Little Green Money Machine!
Inner-city youth from Chicago's West Side participate in Global Entrepreneurship Week. Over 20 youth from the John Marshall High School 4H Club Agribusiness program helped plan and run businesses at the Little Green Money Machine booth at the Chicago Toy & Game Fair November 20-21, 2010.
"This real-life experience with the Little Green Money Machine really opened their eyes to how something they enjoy doing can turn into something that will benefit them now, and in the future," says Frances Johnson, 4H Youth & Family Community Worker.
The John Marshall High School was declared a turn-around school in February, 2010. With an at-risk population, high crime rates, and low-income students, attendance was dropping, discipline issues were on the rise, and graduation rates were staggeringly low.
Carol Williams has taught the Agricultural Program at John Marshall High School for over 16 years. It is an entrepreneurial program that uses agricultural sciences through agribusiness principles. This program has remained one of the only successes of the turn-around school over time.
"The more they really take ownership, and the more real-life experiences like this past weekend with the Little Green Money Machine at the Chicago Toy & Game Fair, the more excited the students get. They talk about what they're doing, they're proud of what they're doing. They came back to school Monday morning excited to share what they learned at the Chicago Toy & Game Fair. They wrote up an announcement and presented it over the intercom to the entire school, they gave each other shout outs and shared their experiences."
Frances Johnson has been working with the 4H Agricultural group at the high school for over 5 years with a focus on developing life skills, team building, entrepreneurship, leadership, and customer service. This elective Agribusiness class works in conjunction with 4H and provides students the ability to create their very own company.
"It's not enough for a student to learn how to grow a plant. They have to learn how to sell a plant, how to market a plant, how to make money on the plant, and ultimately learn the big-picture real world application," says Carol Williams
The Little Green Money Machine includes a book and business stand for kids, tweens, and teens to learn how to set goals, set up their first business, earn and save money, as well as give back to the community. The Little Green Money Machine products lay the foundation for a future generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators.
"I see so much potential in them, a lot of times it's just that they haven't had the opportunity for exposure, they haven't had the opportunities to get to where they need to go." - Frances Johnson
The Little Green Money Machine interactive learning system can be used in school systems, youth groups, and nonprofits and can be customized to accommodate the unique needs and desired outcomes of any group.
Every aspect of the Little Green Money Machine interactive learning system can be tailored to a variety of educational programs, from high-risk students who require a different learning style to stay engaged, to gifted students who need an extra challenge.
By using the Little Green Money Machine interactive learning system, kids, tweens, and teens will gain valuable hands-on skills, become more self-aware, and build their self-confidence.
