Shoppers Pounce on Winter Sales, Says DiscountVouchers.co.uk

Striving to beat the rise in VAT and with retailer discounts has seen massive rises in sales over the winter - says leading money saving website.

2011-01-21
SURREY, ENGLAND, January 21, 2011 (Press-News.org) In order to beat the VAT rise, shoppers in the UK have been grabbing bargains on high-value ticket prices, according to DiscountVouchers.co.uk the money saving website, and that has seen a 500% increase in sales this month compared to last January.

The main areas where shoppers have been spending largely have been on white goods, holidays, televisions, computers and health & fitness memberships. This is shown by a 39% rise in the average price for transactions over January, showing the demand of expensive goods before the hike in VAT.

Added to the frantic buying of consumers before the VAT hike, retailers have been slashing up to 70% off their prices, which has also increased sales in December and January, according to the discount code site. There has also been an increase in voucher codes being used as people in the UK are more inclined to hunt around for cheaper deals and not pay the list price for goods any more. The main areas of savings were on experiences, gifts and food & drink.

DiscountVouchers.co.uk director Mr Simon Terry said: "Late December and early January have seen huge amounts of sales due to the impending VAT rise and retailers slashing their prices on high-value goods. This has had a knock on effect to our sales figures to, which have increased, as people are more actively looking for ways to save money and our site does just that."

"UK consumers are more inclined to shop around and find the best bargains now, and that means they won't settle for paying the full ticket price for anything. It's not just smaller companies either, many major retailers have discounts too."

Sales are still flooding in despite the increase in VAT, and using the DiscountVouchers.co.uk website consumers can get up to 60% off DVD & Blu-rays at Amazon; 50% off Zizzi main courses; First Choice has up to GBP200 holidays per couple and kids go free; House of Fraser has up to 70% off; Hilton Hotels weekend breaks has up to 50% off; and there is up to 70% off video games.

"Being snowed-in last December and shoppers cutting back on spending made retailers slash their prices by 50%, and in some cases 70%, which made a boost in sales figures. It also meant we could offer superb savings too", added Simon.

As one of the UK's top money saving websites DiscountVouchers.co.uk has hundreds of deals and exclusive discounts from major high-street retailers such as Travelodge, Lastminute.com, Boden, Tesco, First Choice, Sainsbury's, Marks & Spencer and many more.
