DirectRooms.com - Celebrate the Makha Bucha Festival in Kanchanaburi

DirectRooms.com can now announce that the yearly Makha Bucha festival will take place in Kanchanaburi, Thailand on 18th February 2011. The city is famous for its bridge over the River Kwai.

2011-01-23
PHUKET, THAILAND, January 23, 2011 (Press-News.org) This festival is to celebrate the Buddha's first sermon to his followers and is one of the three most important Buddhist festivals in Thailand. The day also celebrates the announcement of the Buddha to his disciples that he will leave this earthly life in exactly three months.

Makha Bucha is Pali. The meaning of "Makha" is the third lunar month and "Bucha" means to honour something. Makha Bucha, therefore, does not take place on the same date every year, but is calculated to coincide with the full moon day of the third lunar month. In 2011 this will be on 18th February.

The festival is marked by colourful processions, multitudes of Buddhist flags and the giving of alms to poor people. When the sun sets, thousands of Buddhists take part in a ceremony called "wian tian." This is where people walk around a temple or a statue of the Buddha three times in a row, carrying lighted candles.

"This is a unique opportunity to see one of Thailand's major religious festivals." said Lek Boonlert, Head of Marketing at DirectRooms.com.

Guests staying at cheap Kanchanaburi hotels will no doubt have an unforgettable experience and take back many photos and even more memories of this enchanting festival.

The festival is open to the general public. There will also be many food stalls, which will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to sample the diverse and delicious cuisine of Thailand.
