Los Angeles Fire Protection Firm Observes NFPW

Nationwide Fire Protection Corp. will observe National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 3-9.

2010-09-04
PLACENTIA, CA, September 04, 2010 (Press-News.org) Nationwide Fire Protection Corp., a Placentia and Los Angeles fire protection company, is observing National Fire Protection Week this October by sharing information on fire protection with potential and current clients.

National Fire Prevention Week will be observed Oct. 3-9 this year. It is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association and is recognized annually in October, said Massoud Farazandeh, a fire sprinkler system expert who serves as NFP's general manager.

NFPW has been observed since 1922 on the Sunday through Saturday in which Oct. 9 falls each year, according to information posted on NFPA's website. The observance was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, which began on Oct. 8, 1871, but caused the most damage on Oct. 9. The fire destroyed more than 17,400 structures, burned more than 2,000 acres, killed more than 250 people, and left 100,000 people homeless.

"Most of the information available in honor of this week-long observance is geared toward fire prevention for homeowners," said Farazandeh, whose company specializes in Los Angeles fire sprinkler systems installations, service and inspections for restaurants and commercial kitchens. "We are broadening our focus a bit during the event to encourage restaurant owners and managers to ensure they are doing all they can to protect their property and employees from fires."

Nationwide recently released the follow tips:

Fire Prevention Tips
1. Make sure fire extinguishers are charged at all times.
2. Have fire suppression systems inspected every six months, and tested once or twice each year. The testing is a pull system test, where the system must be set off to ensure it is in proper working order in the event of a fire.
3. Replace the links on nozzles every year.
4. Make sure fire systems are up to code. As technology evolves, state and federal codes also change.
5. For restaurants, keep kitchen hoods clean by making sure they are grease-free. This means cleaning hoods, ducts and fans every six months at a minimum, and more frequently, depending on the volume of food cooked and the types of cooking processes used.

Restaurants are the primary cause of big commercial fires, said Farazandeh, whose company installs Los Angeles fire suppression systems. Excessive grease in the hoods and ducts is the culprit in 60 percent of restaurant fires.
