Although this condition is not new, the treatment for this is a recent discovery. More recently, this condition has been referred to as the blackberry thumb. This is in reference, of course, to one of the more common causes of this condition, which is the usage a ballot right devices, palm top gadgets, cellular phones, PDAs, and the BlackBerry. However, not as a found out that the condition is the most common and that mothers who have newborn children. Because of this reason the condition is now called mommy thumb.

The mommy thumb usually develops in the last trimester of pregnancy and some women. This is when pregnant women actually retain fluid that may lead to swelling within the compartments of the hands and wrists. Although this usually leads to a totally different condition called the carpal tunnel syndrome that actually resolves after childbirth. However, the mommy thumb usually develops after childbirth until and the child turns about a year old. This is because most in new mothers perform forceful or repetitive grasping of a of the child while lifting the baby up, or simply by carrying the infant too much. Another cause for this may be women who breast feed and place their hands in awkward positions to cup their breasts, all of which can be cured by LA hand surgery.

So what are the symptoms of mommy thumb? This is often characterized by pain in the wrist with every motion of the thumb. The pain may extend up to the forearm and even cause the wrist to swell up.

This pain is often in uncomfortable, and in some cases even unbearable. This is why the hand and wrist institute has decided to offer services to correct the mommy thumb by wrist arthoscopy doctor Los Angeles . Although there are non surgical ways of treating the said condition, sometimes the case is too severe that only surgical treatment is the option left. This type of surgery is usually done in 5 minutes; it is stitched less and minimally invasive (this involves only a 1 cm incision with a local anesthetic). The procedure also does not require the patient to be hospitalized before, during, or even after it is performed. A few days after and the patient can get back to his or her normal daily activities.
