ENCINITAS, CA, September 07, 2010 (Press-News.org) The Grauer School's Living Library will host celebrated author and syndicated columnist Richard Lederer as guest speaker on Thursday, September 16, 2010, 7:00 p.m., on the Encinitas campus for his performance of "An Evening of Language and Laughter." The entertaining, enlightening show takes the audience on a fascinating journey through the annals of the English language, from its exalted brilliance to its infamous oddities. The event is free and open to the public and will include a book signing of his latest release, The Gift of Age.
Lederer, a seasoned educator who earned his Ph.D. in English and Linguistics at the University of New Hampshire, explains, "The Grauer School and I are a perfect match. I taught at St. Paul's School and I left to expand my mission of teachership. Performing at The Grauer School does just that."
Dr. Lederer entered Haverford College as a pre-medical student but soon found himself reading chemistry books for their literary value. He quickly switched to an English major and then attended Harvard Law School, where he found himself in the same dilemma, so switched majors once again, this time into a Masters of Arts and Teaching program. This led him to a position at St. Paul's School in Concord, NH, where he taught English and media for 27 years. Earning his Ph.D. inspired him to write books on language. He has authored more than 35 books about language, history, and humor, including his best-selling Anguished English series. Dr. Lederer's syndicated column, "Looking at Language," appears in newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S. and is a founding co-host of "A Way with Words" on public radio. Grauer Head of School, Dr. Stuart Grauer, commented on "A Way With Words", noting, "The show is the greatest! We love it when Richard Lederer makes guest appearances. He is a natural, and he captures the wit and wisdom of great, traditional teachers."
The Grauer School, founded in 1991, is a private, grades 6 -12 college preparatory school accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is renowned for its academic excellence, attracting $2.2 million in scholarships for its 2010 18-member graduating class. To learn more about The Grauer School experience, or the upcoming Speaker and Film series, visit http://www.grauerschool.com or call 760/944-6777. The school is located at 1500 S. El Camino Real in Encinitas.
